PLAIN CITY -- It has been an eventful month for the Lancers' Camry Godfrey.
She turned 16 years old on Oct. 5, and Godfrey learned Monday she would be the team's setter for Tuesday's league match in the Wolf Den.
"I was told Monday at practice I would be setting today; I was really excited," Godfrey said. "I set JV and sophomore, so it was good to set varsity, too."
With the defending Region 1 champion Lancers totally revamping their lineup -- setter McKell Wahlen moved to libero, Mariah Katoa switched to middle blocker from outside hitter, Nicole Katoa moved from libero back to outside hitter and Godfrey made her varsity debut at setter after playing opposite-side hitter -- the result was a 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 cakewalk over Fremont in only 64 minutes.
"Setting varsity is a lot more intense than setting JV and sophomore," said Godfrey, who had 34 assists and two aces.
Mariah Katoa had 21 kills and eight block assists, and older sister Nicole had six kills, four block assists and 18 digs for Layton, which had seven aces.
The Lancers' Maranda Turner had nine kills, two block assists, 22 digs and two aces; Wahlen had 11 digs; Maddison Jorgensen had three block assists; and Kirstin Teuscher had 11 digs.
"McKell is a great libero and Camry is coming of age at setter. She has progressed enough to be a varsity setter," Layton coach Ricci Vowles said. "The plan is to stick with this lineup," she said. "We need to be stable before the state 5-A tournament, and we play better when we're confident."
