Jayhawks pile up a dozen goals

OGDEN -- The fireworks kicked off early and often at Lew Joseph Memorial Field.

St. Joseph's Alex Shaw scored in the third minute, one of her three tallies of the day, to kick things off, as St. Joseph opened up defense of its state 2-A girls soccer title with a 12-0 victory over Grand County on Saturday afternoon.

"We tried to work in several different formations today," St. Joseph coach Alex Salvo said. "We tried to work in a 3-6-1 and a 3-4-3. We wanted to add some different things to the package in case we need them. We've been working on those in practice and we wanted to try them in a game situation."

The Jayhawks' Ivee Barton also tallied a hat trick, while Joanna Matyjasik added two goals for St. Joseph, which led 4-0 at halftime before erupting in the opening minutes of the second half.

"We didn't know very much about Grand," Salvo said. "They don't play many games outside of their region, so that league is always kind of a mystery to me."

Megan Pollock, Michelle Howe, Tauna DeHaan and Katie Panushka each scored single goals for St. Joseph. DeHaan had three assists, Barton, Matyjasik, Jackie Bafford, Melissa Frough and goalkeeper Molly Porter each tallied single assists. Porter also notched the shutout in goal.

After Shaw's fourth minute score, the Jayhawks scored every 10 minutes after to take the 4-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, which was extended to allow St. Joseph to present its seniors to the crowd, the Jayhawks stomped on the gas.

St. Joseph (10-5-0 overall) scored six goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to push the lead at 10 before going on cruise control over the final minutes.

St. Joseph will face Region 12 champion Millard in Friday's 1:15 p.m. semifinal at Jordan High School.

3-A tournament

* MORGAN 2, PARK CITY 1: At Park City, the Trojans punched their ticket to the 3-A semifinals with a victory over the Region 10 champion Miners. It was Morgan's second state road win in a row.

"We outshot them today," Morgan coach Tara Ferrin said. "It's fun to see this bunch continue playing well together."

A.J. Bateman's cross ended up in the back of the net in the first minutes of the contest, and after Park City tied it on a PK, Becca Rees headed home a Kersey Davis flip throw go to lift Morgan.

Shelby Jensen and Heidi Benson controlled the defensive side of things for the Trojans (12-6-0).

The Trojans will face Region 11 rival Judge Memorial (15-3-0) in Friday's 3:45 p.m. semifinal at Jordan High School.

* BEAR RIVER 2, WASATCH 1: At Heber City, the upstart Bears scored twice in the first half and held off the Wasps in the second to advance to the semifinal round along with three other Region 11 schools.
