LAYTON -- A taxing Tuesday practice was not how Titans setter Rylee Garver envisioned celebrating her 17th birthday.
Syracuse High's five-game road breakthrough over defending Region 1 champion Layton was more to her liking.
"This and the Northridge match are our two best matches of the year," Garver said. "I couldn't sleep last night; I kept waking up after dreaming. I couldn't focus in school; I had butterflies all day."
Garver had 37 assists and 14 digs as the Titans speared the Lancers 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-10 in 1 hour and 51 minutes.
"Our back-row passing and defense were excellent today. The Titans are for real," Garver said. "We play down to the level of our competition sometimes, but we really stepped up against Layton and Northridge. Having the (league) bye Tuesday helped us. We had a tough practice Tuesday, tougher than usual. We really came together as a team."
Brittney Martin had 16 kills, three solo blocks, 13 digs and four aces for Syracuse, which won its fourth straight. Kylie Cordon had 14 kills, 14 digs and three aces; freshman Maggie Hansen had nine kills, one solo block and 14 digs; Nicole Soifua had seven kills and four solo blocks; and libero Timmarie Taylor had 31 digs for the Titans, who had nine aces and six service errors in defeating Layton for the first time in school history.
"If we could just play consistently," Garver said. "We're like a roller coaster, but we have a good bunch of girls. We set a goal of staying together all week, and we did that today. I think we did a good job of keeping our heads in the match and having confidence in each other.
"I love the pressure of being a setter," she said. "We try and mix it up and run plays, but there is no certain player that I go to. I feel like I can set the ball to anybody and they can put it down. If they don't, then I'll accept the blame."
