Warriors keep playoff hopes alive

PLEASANT VIEW -- The Warriors are still not in, but they are this close.

Weber High School, which has not advanced to the state 5-A volleyball tournament since 2004 and faced an elimination match Tuesday versus crosscounty rival Fremont, kept its 5-A tournament aspirations alive with a 25-22, 13-25, 29-27, 18-25, 15-10 victory over the Silver Wolves in 1 hour and 53 minutes in Richard R. Conolly Gymnasium.

"We needed to win today," Weber senior outside hitter Shelby Anderson said. "There was pressure on both teams since we're each fighting for a position in the tournament."

A win at Roy on Thursday puts the Warriors into the state 5-A tournament. A Weber loss necessitates a fifth-place playoff match against Fremont next week.

Anderson, a two-year starter who played middle blocker as a junior, missed the first Fremont match on Sept. 22 with an elbow injury.

"I had a deep bone bruise on the inside of my right elbow. It was tough not playing the first time (a five-game loss to the Silver Wolves)," she said. "I wanted to play, but the doctor said no. My team really stepped up without me.

"There were a lot of things going on today. It was 'Senior Day' for the four seniors and our last home match," Anderson said.

Anderson had 20 kills and four solo blocks; Myrika Martin had 13 kills and four block assists; and setter Kim Reeves had 37 assists, two kills and two aces for Weber, which had six aces and 16 service errors.

"It's not a day everybody looks forward to, being a senior and playing your last home match," Anderson said. "It feels good to go out with a win, especially against Fremont.

"Fremont has always been our rival. We want to beat them as much as they want to beat us," she said. "We stuck together today and we continued to play as a team. We also stayed positive."

The Silver Wolves' Bailey Bateman had 26 kills, one solo block, three block assists and 22 digs. Kaisha Wray had 13 kills, a solo block, two block assists and 21 digs; Devyn McFarland had three solo blocks and nine block assists; setter Morgan Smith had 44 assists and 17 digs; libero Melissa Pelaez had 24 digs; and Kailey Deaton had 19 digs for Fremont, which had no aces and eight service errors.

"This win will carry over against Roy," Anderson said. "We have another big challenge on Thursday. We have to win this match if we want to go to state. It's been a goal to go to state for the four seniors since we were sophomores."
