Siddens captures UGA Senior Match Play title, finds peace

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Kirk Siddens found a bit of redemption in winning the UGA Senior Match Play championship Friday at Hill Air Force by a 3 and 1 margin over Mark Madsen. 

For 15 years, every time Siddens has set foot on the Hubbard Golf Course at Hill Air Force Base, memories of the past have stalked him with the ghost of ‘what could have been.” 

What to watch for at the Preakness

BALTIMORE — All eyes will be on Kentucky Derby winner Orb in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. The 3-year-old colt will take on eight challengers in the second leg of the Triple Crown. If he wins, Orb will attempt to become the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978 at the Belmont Stakes on June 8. In the Preakness, Orb will be facing five horses he defeated in the Derby and three who did not run in the race.

As fireworks crackle, Beckham plays last home game

PARIS — Never a stranger to the big stage, David Beckham went out in a burst of fireworks and adulation Saturday in his final home game for Paris Saint-Germain before retirement.

Fans chanted his name before the game, and they chanted some more when he was finished. There was an outpouring of hugs, cheers, song and congratulations — from teammates, opponents and even former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

There also was some soccer to be played. And Beckham, appointed captain for the game, was involved in two of his team’s goals in a 3-1 victory over Brest.

Record-setting runner gets invite to Dream Mile

PROVO — News travels fast in the world of track and field.

Ogden High’s Sarah Feeny set the Utah prep record in the girls mile on Friday morning, and by the afternoon, the Tigers’ junior star had been extended an invitation to compete in the prestigious Dream Mile next weekend in New York City.

Several records fell on Friday, the first day of action at the state track and field championships at BYU’s Robison Track Stadium.

Today, individual and team champions will be crowned in all five classifications.
