Kiss my splash ... Davis, Fremont boys, Layton girls shine at Region 1 Relays

LAYTON -- During an afternoon of fast-paced and sometimes crazy relays, Region 1 swimmers paced themselves against each other in a showcase of the largest region in the state on Tuesday at Layton's Surf 'n Swim.

On the girls' side an always competitive Layton used its home-pool advantage to beat out Weber and Davis while Davis tied with a surprising Fremont team under new coach Tim Shupe for the boys' title.

"Having these relays we get a chance to see what competition is coming up," said Craig Bjorkland, who coaches both Layton and Davis boys and girls.

While several swimmers emerged as forces to be reckoned with, the relay-style and unusual events such as the kickboard and tube relays made the annual Region Relays a fun and relaxed event.

"This is just a fun meet," said Weber coach Bill Cruff. "The kids have been working hard and it's fun to do some different events."

For the Layton girls, Elizabeth Thompson swam some of the fastest splits of the day swimming a 1:01.07 in the 100-yard backstroke on the winning 400-yard medley, and a 26.75 split on her winning 200-yard butterfly team. She also led her 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle teams to victory. Thompson was coming off of a stellar performance at the Greg Fenley Invitational in St. George where she broke two school records and jumped to the top of state lists in the 500-yard Freestyle, and the 100-yard Breaststroke.

The Davis boys were led by fast splits from Zach Santella. Santella led his 400-yard medley, 800-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly relay teams to first place finishes, and helped his mixed 200-yard freestyle tube team to second place (unscored). For the Fremont boys sophomore Greg Mayer was a dominating force leading his 200-yard backstroke team to a first place.

While Fremont may have been a surprise at the top, newcomer Roy was also a surprise in fourth place.

Final team scores for the boys were 1. Fremont and Davis 160, 3. Layton 132, 4. Roy 126, 5. Weber 114, 6. Syracuse 100, 7. Clearfield 76, 8. Northridge and Viewmont 48.

For the girls it was 1. Layton 174, 2. Weber 150, 3. Davis 146, 4. Fremont 122, 5. Northridge 96, 6. Syracuse 80, 7. Roy 74, 8. Viewmont 62 and 9. Clearfield 34.
