USU drowns in sea of red / Brown leads Utes past Utah State in tight contest

SALT LAKE CITY -- Carlon Brown kept track of all 11,000 3-point shots he took this summer to prepare for this season at Utah.

Brown, who is known for his slashing and his dunks, said he made some 7,000 long-range jumpers in the summer and then showed Utah State what he learned Wednesday night as Utah outlasted the Aggies 68-67.

"I focused on adding the long jumper to my game so I could become a more complete player. Great players want the ball in key situations and can score no matter where they are," said Brown, who scored a career-high 22 points.

After Jared Quayle scored the final two of his career-best 27 points on a pair of free throws with 27.6 seconds remaining, Luka Drca made two foul shots for a 67-64 Utah lead.

"I believe in myself and even though I missed all four free throws in my last game, I felt I would make them," Drca said.

Tyler Newbold and Quayle missed chances to tie the game and then Quayle had to use his fifth foul to stop the clock.

"We were physical tonight. We got into people a little bit and weren't afraid to hit them now and then," Utah coach Jim Boylen said.

Kim Tillie missed the first free throw but made the second to clinch the game. Jaxon Myaer made a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to provide the final score.

"That was a tough one to swallow. Give them credit, they found a way to win it, but I think we found a way not to win it. It feels like we gave one away," Utah State coach Stew Morrill said.

Drca had 11 points and six assists for the Utes, who were outrebounded 38-27 but forced 17 Aggie turnovers.

Tai Wesley had 14 points for the Aggies but made only one basket in the second half.

Quayle, the only senior on the Utah State roster, picked up the slack with 20 points in the second half and made 5 of 7 3-pointers. He also had a career-high 11 rebounds.

"Quayle is a beast. I'm not surprised what he did tonight. He's one of the most underrated players we'll face all season. He's a terrific player, a tough nut," Boylen said.
