State football championship updates

State football championship Friday from Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium.

5-A championship

Bingham 35, Davis 24

Davis may be an underdog to some pundits, but the Darts are ready to play.

Davis takes the opening drive and marches right down field, scoring on a Gavin Fowler to Daniel Moffett 16-yard TD pass.

Davis leads 7-0.

Davis holds the Miners again but can't get past midfield. The Darts punt deep and the kick appears to nick a Bingham player. But the referees say no.

First Quarter: Davis 7, Bingham 0

---

Bingham moves the ball down to the goal line, punching it in for the tying score.

Tied at 7-7.

Davis responds with a solid drive of its own, capped by a scoring pass from Fowler to Landon Horne.

Davis 14-7.

Darts defense is making Bingham work hard.

Miners punt down to inside 5-yard-line with just a couple of minutes to go until halftime. But Hinds, Fowler and Moffett each come up with big plays and the Darts march to within field goal range. Mike Jewkes drills the field goal as the half end.

Halftime: Davis 17, Bingham 7

---

Bingham scores on a Stefan Cantwell 13-yard scoring run.

But the Darts respond with a score of their own, a Tanner Hinds 8-yard score.

Third quarter: Davis 24, Bingham 17

---

As the fourth quarter begins, Bingham drives to paydirt on another Cantwell TD burst, taking the 28-24 lead.

Can Davis respond?

Darts' Fowler tosses an interception. Still plenty of time.

Bingham scores to put game out of reach, 35-24.

A game Davis High squad falls 35-24.

 ----

 4-A championship

Timpview 35, Springville 6

The Thunderbirds win their fourth straight title with a stellar effort.

Timpview forced five Springville turnovers, turning a 14-6 lead into a rout in the final quarter.

 ----

3-A championship

Juan Diego 12, Hurricane 10

A rematch of last year's 3-A title game.

Scoreless first quarter.

----

Juan Diego gets on the board first with a Jaron Bentrude field goal.

Then they add a 48-yarder to take a 6-0 lead.

The Soaring Eagle edged the Tigers in last season's title game with, you guessed it, a field goal.

Halftime: Juan Diego 6, Hurricane 0

---

Will there be any more points in this game? It's getting cold.

Hurricane got a 40-yard field goal from Cory Edwards and an amazing TD run by Tigers QB Adam Long to take a 10-6 lead with less than a minute to play.

But Juan Diego responded as Cody Stevenson tossed three passes totaling 80 yards, the last one a 31-yard TD to Bruce Nix on the final play of the game to boost the Soaring Eagle to the title.
