SLIDESHOW: Ogden High vs Roy High
OGDEN -- New gym, same old result.
The Ogden High girls basketball team, renowned for taking full advantage of its tiny old gym, won its first game in the school's new digs, taking a hard-fought 34-29 win over Roy on Tuesday night as prep hoops action heated up across the state.
It is the first win for an Ogden squad in the new gym.
"This gym is different, six feet longer than the old court, but a good place. We think it will be just as loud when the crowd gets going," Ogden assistant Genevieve Bilanzich said. "This was a very physical game."
Roy led 15-11 at halftime, outhustling the Tigers and turning Tiger turnovers into points.
But Ogden made a statement in the third quarter, outscoring the Royals 14-4.
In the final quarter, Ogden made enough free throws down the stretch to snag the win.
Kia Wilson and Shanice Stevenson led Ogden with eight points apiece, while Keri Lammert paced the Tigers' defensive pressure.
Alissa Willard topped Roy with 14 points. The Royals were hurt by 6-of-20 shooting at the free throw line.
* MORGAN 74, EAST 32: At Morgan, the Trojans raced out to a 20-5 first quarter lead and never looked back in capturing a 42-point win in their season opener.
Using a suffocating full-court press reminiscent of Morgan teams of the past, the Trojans forced numerous Leopard turnovers, resulting in easy shots at the other end.
"What we wanted to do was run and we did that," Morgan coach Brad Matthews said. "We got a lot of fast break points and a lot of layups. We came out and did exactly what we wanted to do with the press and getting easy baskets.
"A lot of girls contributed and that's going to be big this year because we've got such a deep team," Matthews added. "It was a good all-around game for us."
Chelsey Morgan scored 18 points and Angela Blazzard added 15 to lead the Trojans, while stat-stuffer Ashley Garfield contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals.
