SLIDESHOW: Weber State vs. William & Mary football
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Tim Toone and his fellow seniors at Weber State walked off the field for the final time on Saturday, and none of them were smiling.
The No. 15-ranked Wildcats ended their season with a 38-0 loss to No. 6-ranked William & Mary in a game that featured a WSU team its fans would not have recognized had they made the trip to Zable Field on the campus of the College of William & Mary.
"We watched our program get built up for four years and to end it on a note like this, it doesn't reflect Weber State and it doesn't reflect the team we have," Toone said.
The Wildcats stayed even with the Tribe in the first quarter, but a pair of costly interceptions were returned for touchdowns by William & Mary in the second quarter and those plays got the Tribe going.
The Wildcats never recovered.
"When you turn the ball over, and turn it over for scores, you're probably not going to win," said WSU coach Ron McBride.
WSU quarterback Cameron Higgins threw four interceptions and fumbled once. The Tribe took care of the ball and didn't commit a turnover.
WSU had its chances to take the lead in the first half, but missed field goals from 47 and 50 yards, plus a handful of dropped passes, kept the Wildcats from putting points on the board. In the second half the Wildcats didn't even threaten to score and the defense wore down and began giving up scores to the Tribe.
"I think we took a lot out of them with those turnovers in the first half," said William & Mary coach Jimmye Laycock.
This was the second straight season that WSU has made the FCS playoffs, and just the fourth time in the school's history. Last season, the Wildcats advanced to the quarterfinals before losing.
