The state's wrestling squads have polished off the Thanksgiving break, made weight and now prepare for the first round of wrestling invitationals that will toughen them up for the region and state tournaments on the horizon.
Syracuse will host its popular Titan Duals on Friday and Saturday, while the Layton Invitational traditionally draws many of the eliter 5-A and 4-A teams to its meet, also on Friday and Saturday. Several area schools also choose to travel to Evanston, Wyo., for the tough Evanston tournament this weekend.
Region 1 has backed up its boast as the top 5-A league in the state by winning the last eight 5-A titles.
Viewmont has won five of the last six titles, usually by edging fellow Region 1 schools like Davis, Weber, Fremont and Layton.
Those schools all expect to chase the Vikings once again, with a tough Roy squad joining the region this season.
At the 4-A level, Payson edged Mountain Crest and Box Elder by a handful of points to win the state title. Both the Mustangs and Bees will look to exact revenge this season, with Logan also hoping to make an impact in its return to the 4-A ranks.
Delta knocked Wasatch off its lofty 3-A title perch, and those two will battle for supremacy again this season. Look for Morgan and Bear River to challenge as well.
Millard and South Summit toil in the 2-A ranks, but may be just as strong as any of the 4-A and 5-A teams. Millard has won 10 of the last 12 2-A crowns.
