OGDEN -- Early-morning weightlifting, summer shooting programs and conditioning; it's all starting to pay off for the Ben Lomond Scots.

The Ben Lomond girls basketball team improved to 3-0 for the first time in 10 seasons with a 72-41 victory over Park City on Thursday night in non-league action.

"I'm happy for our success, because we're getting wins against good 2-A and 5-A opponents," second-year coach Andrew Short said. "We have a very tough region, I think the toughest in the state, and so we need to continue to improve every game to get ready for league play."

Taylor Hughes scored 28 points, Kambri Broad added 15 points and Lindsey James added nine as the Scots turned 30 turnovers into numerous layups.

Teja Mangum helped Ben Lomond dominate the boards as well.

"Taylor and Kambri have been taking turns leading us," Short said.

The Scots led 33-25 at halftime, but ran away from the Miners in the second half.

"We had a lot of transition points, but we could have done better making our layups," Short said. "This group is very dedicated to what we're trying to accomplish. They've worked all from the summer leagues to conditioning and in practice. We have to keep getting better."

Laurel Kasel scored 21 points for Park City.

* MERIDIAN 54, CHRISTIAN HERITAGE 51: At Provo, the host Mongoose made one play late in the contest to claim the close battle.

Both teams battled throughout. In the final half minute, Meridian forced a turnover, and scored and basket and free throw in the final seconds. The Crusaders' last-gasp shot to tie the game just missed.

Rachel Allen led Meridian with 27 points.

Brittany Hurlbut tallied 16 points, six rebounds and four steals for CHS (2-2), while Emilie Volk added 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Candace Fairman chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds.

* ROY 51, BOX ELDER 23: At Roy, the Royals earned their first win of the season. Alissa Willard scored 16 points and added 13 rebounds, and Aly Gray and Jessyca Fulmer had 12 points each for Roy.

Melinda Pyle and Kaylee Walker paced Box Elder with seven points apiece.

* SYRACUSE 61, SKYLINE 44: At Syracuse, foul troubles kept the contest close through two quarters but the Titans broke loose for a big third-quarter surge.

Brittney Martin scored 14 of her 24 points before halftime, and added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Jenn Hazlett added 12 points, all coming in the pivotal third stanza.

Syracuse made some key adjustments at the break, and used its press to perfection in the 24-4 third quarter. Whitney Jenkins and Hannah Bezdjian had a dozen each for the Eagles.

* CLEARFIELD 42, KEARNS 33: At Kearns, the Falcons won the back-and-forth battle. No details were reported.
