SLIDESHOW: Ogden High vs Roy High
ROY -- Ogden's speedy offense ran circles around the Roy High Royals as the Tigers netted their first win of the year 54-33 on Roy's home court Tuesday night.
Both teams were looking for their first wins, as the Tigers rolled into town after dropping a preseason heartbreaker by taking Weber High through double overtime to lose 60-55 last Thursday, while their Royal hosts had lost all three of their preseason matches.
From the opening tip-off, Ogden senior guard Jake Buck orchestrated an Ogden offense that powered past everything the Royal defense could muster. The 5-foot-10 senior scored 11 points and ran an Ogden attack that seemed playoff ready, as opposed to a second-game team.
"We knew we played well last Thursday," said Ogden head coach Jace Mckee said. "We felt bad about losing, but not about how we played. We knew we were going to get better, and the kids came out and played really hard tonight."
On defense the Tigers stifled Roy, denying any access to the paint and holding the Royals to just three first-quarter points. And in a fairly even-matched height comparison, Ogden dominated the boards outrebounding Roy 27-15
"The boys worked real hard and defended well tonight," Mckee said.
Junior center Jake Lower led Ogden with 15 points, several key rebounds, and a big block in the third quarter.
Buck contributed 11 points with big back-to-back 3-pointers that all but sealed the game late in the third. Buck also added several assists and opened up the offense with superb ball handling and precision passing.
Ogden's bench was a factor as well scoring 13, led by senior forward Nathan Kapple's three field goals with a perfect 2-for-2 from the line.
Despite the loss, senior Bubba Blau led the Royal effort with 9 points including a desperate 3-pointer in the game's waning minutes.
Both teams play again on Friday as Roy (0-4) heads to Ben Lomond (4-0), while the Tigers (1-1) host Stansbury (1-1).
* DAVIS 55, WEST JORDAN 54 (OT): At Kaysville, Tallon Burton scored a layup basket as time expired in overtime to keep the Darts undefeated in preseason play.
"I was just in the right place at the right time," Burton said. "My guy kind of lost me and I was able to back cut him and get open on the rebound and put it back up.
"The ball just fell into my hands and I wasn't thinking about the time, just get the ball in the hole," Burton said.
West Jordan missed a pair of free throws with 9.6 seconds left in overtime, and then the Darts raced down court without a timeout and Burton rebounded a short jumper from the right angle to send the crowd home happy.
"We talked about calling a timeout, but the word didn't get to all the players on the court," Davis coach Jay Welk said. "But I guess it worked out ok."
Burton led the Darts with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Trevor Webb notched double digits off the bench with 13 and Kyle Smith checked in with 12 counters.
