Bees top Lancers 54-47

LAYTON -- If you cannot be ahead going into the fourth quarter, then the next-best thing is being tied.

Deadlocked 43-all after three periods, the Lancers got outscored 11-4 during the pivotal fourth quarter Wednesday, falling to Box Elder 54-47 in a non-league game.

"I think it was our composure in the fourth quarter," Box Elder coach Keith Mecham said. "We didn't execute too well in the fourth in the ballgame last night (a 53-47 home-court loss to Weber High). Tonight, we showed better patience and we trusted each other."

The Bees (2-2 overall) defeated Layton for the sixth consecutive time, and lead 8-3 in the last 11 games.

"It's nothing particular against Layton," Mecham said. "I don't say anything to the kids; we just play. I felt like we had an advantage in the high pick-and-roll, and Brad (Munns) did a good job attacking the rim. We're a team working to get better."

Munns hit 6-of-13 shots for a team-high 14 points and dished off four assists for Box Elder, which shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48) -- 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range -- in snapping a two-game slide.

The Bees' Cody Eyre ended up with 14 points and three 3-pointers, and Brant Mecham had 12 points with three 3s. Chad Talbot grabbed 13 rebounds for Box Elder, which outrebounded the Lancers 36-33.

Brock Maestas scored a season-high 16 points for Layton, which shot 29.8 percent (17-of-57), including 30.0 percent (6-of-20) on 3-point attempts, in falling to 1-3 with its second straight loss.

"The key was they kept the pressure on us and us not finishing at the hoop," Layton coach Kelby Miller said. "I knew it would be a challenge playing back-to-back (games). I was excited to see where we were mentally. It's a tough spot to put high schools kids into, but it was good to have one of these early."

* WEST JORDAN 47, SYRACUSE 41: At West Jordan, the Titans suffered another close loss. Wade Rasmussen scored 10 for Syracuse (1-2).
