Darts fall short

SLIDESHOW: Davis vs. Bingham

KAYSVILLE -- On Tuesday night, following a last-second one-point overtime victory over West Jordan, Davis coach Jay Welk said it was nice to get the win, but the Darts weren't as concerned about the outcome as they were about how they performed and were progressing as a team.

After Friday's 58-49 loss to a powerful and tall Bingham squad, Welk felt the same way and saw things -- good and bad -- that the Darts could take away from the game.

"Execution-wise we have a long way to go on both ends of the floor (offensively and defensively)," Welk said. "But I was proud of how we fought back and came close to winning it at the end against a team that many say is number one in the state."

Led by Utah State-bound Ben Clifford and senior Shad Sommerville, the Miners jumped to a 30-23 halftime lead with the pair scoring 27 of the Bingham total.

Davis trailed by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter, but three consecutive 3-pointers, two by Trevor Webb, closed the gap to 51-49 with 3:44 remaining in the game.

However, the comeback stalled when the Darts turned the ball over on their next five possessions and didn't score the rest of the way in suffering their initial loss of the season.

With Bingham's big men clogging the middle, Davis had to go outside for its shots and finished at 39 percent for the game.

Defensively, the Darts held the Miners below their average of 69 points per game, with Morgan Dunford starting the second half on Clifford, who finished with 20 points after the monster first half.

Webb came off the bench to lead Davis with 18 points and Dunford also notched double figures with 10.

* BEN LOMOND 48, ROY 37: At Ogden, the Scots finally dispatched the pesky Royals with an 18-steals performance.

"Roy is so scrappy, they make it hard to get into your offense," Ben Lomond coach Ryan Wilcox said. "We made some halftime adjustments and put the pressure on them."

Dalton Zundel scored 16 points and had seven steals himself. Marco Perez added 12 points, while Keegan Border added nine for Ben Lomond. Jared Jackson paced the Scots' defense

Cody Wimmer led Roy with 15, while Gabe Funtanilla added 11. The Royals fell behind 11-2 to open the game but came roaring back to reclaim the lead and make it an even game at the half.

"A solid all-around effort from the whole team," said Finder, who also pleased with an 89 percent night at the foul line as well.

Brady Jensen and Hunter Esplin led Bear River with 10 points apiece.

* MORGAN 60, DELTA 40: At Morgan, the Trojans displayed a balanced offense to improve to 3-3.
