Titans tip Fremont by 57-42

SYRACUSE -- They were 21.50 points under their state 5-A leading scoring average (78.50 points per game), yet the Titans still won by 15 points.

"I try to keep the girls together and keep the intensity up for all the girls," Syracuse junior point guard Kiana Fonua said. "As long as we play hard and I play 100 percent to my potential, I'm good."

The 18-year-old Fonua finished with a season-high 16 points Friday and swiped four of the Titans' 17 steals in a 57-42 Region 1 victory over Fremont.

Sophomore Brittney Martin rang up a double-double of 18 points, 14 rebounds and four steals for the defending league champion Titans, who shot only 34.7 percent (17-of-49) in remaining undefeated despite committing 21 turnovers.

"We love our press," Fonua said. "We're a run-and-gun type of team. Practice are killers; we condition the whole practice. For us, defense wins games. For me, defense is the most important part and it brings offense."

Syracuse led by 28 points after three quarters, but the Silver Wolves -- who lost their second straight -- put up 26 fourth-period points. The two teams combined for 34 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

"Coming into the third quarter we lost our defensive intensity a little and we tried to regain that," Fonua said. "You can always improve, and we have high expectations to go all the way. I would love to wear a state championship ring."

Whitney Wallace wound up with a team-high 11 points and Kelsie Bell had 10 for Fremont, which shot just 28.6 percent (12-of-42) and had 14 turnovers.
