Silver Wolves ride charity stripe toward region win

PLAIN CITY -- There was something different about the Fremont girls basketball team during its game on Tuesday against Clearfield.

"We hit our free throws tonight," said Fremont coach Larry Hadley. "In other games we've been atrocious."

During their 63-48 win, the Silver Wolves shot 23-of-27 from the line including a 10-of-12 performance by Kelsie Bell. Bell finished with a game-high 18 points while Whitney Wallace had 15 for Fremont.

Wallace had four 3-pointers in the first half for Fremont, which picked up its first Region 1 win and is now 1-2 in league play (2-5 overall).

"She got them early and that helped us get the ball inside to Kelsie," Hadley said.

Jessica Watson led Clearfield with 24 points as the Falcons fell to 0-2 in league play and 1-4 overall.

"(Watson) had great game down low," Hadley said. "We were trying to key on one and let the other beat us up."

* LAYTON 53, NORTHRIDGE 35: At Layton,Lexy Moss scored 14 points while Addi Moore had 11 in the Lancers' win. Both did damage from the 3-point line with Moss hitting 3 shots from behind the arc and Moore nailing a pair of 3-pointers.

Amanda Gardner had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Northridge.

* WEBER 48, DAVIS 26: At Kaysville, Desiree Young led the Warriors with 14 points during their road win.

Betsy Macsland and Courtney Hurst each had five points for Davis.

* SYRACUSE 52, VIEWMONT 21: At Bountiful, five Titans scored eight points or more to lead Syracuse to a dominating Region 1 victory.

Brittney Martin led Syracuse with 11 points, Jennifer Hazlett and Makenlee Williams each had nine points and Hailee Parry and Kiana Fonua chipped in eight a-peice.

Tyler McFarland led the Vikings with six points.

Non-league

* BEN LOMOND 47, BOX ELDER 28: At Ogden, Ashley Tycz had three 3-pointers on her way to scoring 13 points and leading Ben Lomond to the win. Kambri Broad had a solid all-around game for teh Scots, finishing with nine points, seven assists and four steals.

Katie Vincent and Bethany Ormsby each finished with eight points for the Bees.

* BONNEVILLE 33, OLYMPUS 29: At Washington Terrace,the Lakers held the Titans to single digits in the second and third quarters on their way to another non-region victory.

"I thought that we played well defensively and we scored just enough to get the win," Bonneville coach Mike Russell said. "We did go 0-for-6 from the free-throw line and that is something that we cannot have. However, I am proud of the way that played in the middle of the game and that really got us going there."

Val Buckway scored 17 of her team's 33 points, including three 3-pointers. Bailee Freeland added five points as well in the win.

* MORGAN 58, WASATCH 37: At Morgan, Chelsea Morgan scored 12 points and was one of three Trojan players to score in double digits during Morgan's win. Becca Rees and Rachael Johnson each finished with 11.

Jordan Richardson hit three 3-pointers and had a game-high 14 points for Wasatch.

* MOUNTAIN CREST 39, BEAR RIVER 23: At Hyrum, the Mustangs jumped out to a 25-11 halftime lead and never looked back.

Brianna Jessop led Mountain Crest with 12 points and the Mustangs hit 10-of-14 free-throw attempts to down the Bears.

Shayla Buxton led Bear River with eight points in the losing effort.
