D-Will hurt, Jazz add guard Gaines

SALT LAKE CITY -- While the Utah Jazz sent their star point guard in for an MRI on his sprained right wrist Tuesday morning, they also added an NBADL standout to their roster later that afternoon.

Deron Williams, who suffered sprained wrist and elbow during Monday's loss to New Orleans, did not practice on Tuesday. X-rays taken after the game came back negative, however, in an effort to glean more information, Williams skipped practice to have an MRI.

A team spokesman said results were not expected until later today. Officially, Williams has been listed as a gametime decision for tonight's game with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Also on Tuesday, the Jazz made plans to sign 6-foot-1, 185-pound point guard Sundiata Gaines, to a 10-day contract.

Gaines averaged 23.9 points and 6.9 assists in 14 games with the D-League's Idaho Stampede.

The Jamaica, N.Y., native was the No. 15 overall pick in the NBADL draft.

He spent the 2008-09 campaign in Italy with NGC Cantu, averaging 13.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 30 games.

In college, Gaines spent four seasons at Georgia, where he averaged 11.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He led Georgia to the 2008 SEC tournament title.

His signing with the Jazz won't be official until he passes a physical, which is expected to take place today.

Going into tonight's game with Memphis, Utah has dropped three consecutive decisions, including two at home.

Jazz CEO Greg Miller on Tuesday released a blog statement titled, "My Thoughts on the Jazz."

In it, he detailed five specific "facts" which include a declaration that the Miller family is "committed to winning" and a statement regarding the challenge of making trades in the NBA.
