Bonneville rally falls short; Logan takes Region 5 tilt

SLIDESHOW: Bonneville vs Logan

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Despite a big third-quarter turnaround, the Bonneville Lakers couldn't overcome a 19-point deficit, losing their Region 5 opener 63-54 to the Logan Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

"We dug ourselves a hole too early and just never got out of it," Bonneville coach Jason Finder said. "We were playing really flat, it was a huge second-half turnaround, but it wasn't enough."

Down 30-11 at the start of the third quarter, the Lakers scored 19 points in the third after only three field goals fell for Bonneville in the first half.

Defensive adjustments from zone to man helped hold Logan to nine third-quarter points as senior forward Connor Stephens racked up three steals, converting two of them into 3-point plays as he was fouled on the ensuing drives.

Stephens scored 11 points on the evening, and the Lakers were led by guards Jordan Tesch with 16 -- including a buzzer-beater 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter -- and Thadius Galvez, who scored all of his 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Logan was led by senior guard Sage Nyman, who scored 24 points.

Bonneville missed several key free throws in the games waning minutes.

"There's no night off in our region now," Finder said. "Every team is going to be tough and if we don't come out to play, this will be the outcome."

* MOUNTAIN CREST 57, BOX ELDER 50: At Brigham City, the Bees weren't able to handle the Mustangs' pressure in the late-going.

Matt Stewart and Tyler Weese each tallied 17 for Mountain Crest.

Box Elder rallied from an early deficit to tie things at 32 at halftime. But 12 turnovers in the second half was the difference.

* SKY VIEW 48, OGDEN 35: At Smithfield, the Bobcats protected their home court. Kyler Carlsen led Sky View with 12 points.

The Tigers trailed 43-25 after three quarters. Jake Buck paced Ogden with 10 points.

* WASATCH 60, MORGAN 59: At Morgan, the Trojans went toe-to-toe with arguably the best 3-A team in the state, but fell painfully short when Scott Clark was unable to convert a wide-open layup at the buzzer that would have given the Trojans a spectacular victory.

But Clark can hardly be blamed for the loss. In fact, it was a stroke of luck that he even ended up with the ball.

With 2.5 seconds to go, Wasatch's Trevor Bamgartner attempted to inbound the ball right in front of the Morgan bench, but he was having a hard time seeing past Morgan's Dallin Schenk who was smothering the play. So Bamgartner attempted a low bounce pass, but it skipped right to Clark at the top of the key. Clark took two dribbles toward the basket and leaned in for the layup as the horn went off, but the shot hit the back of the rim and bounced off, sending the Wasps and their fans into a jubilant frenzy.

"It was a great basketball game," Morgan coach Jim Wiscombe said. "We just came up on the short end of it."

The hard-luck Trojans (5-6) have now lost three straight games by a total of five points. Of their six losses this year, five have come by three points or less. Wasatch, meanwhile, extended its winning streak to 10 games and are 11-1 on the season.

Braden Saunders scored a game-high 24 points for the Trojans, including 16 in the first half, while Casey Evans added 10 points.

Bamgartner tossed in 21 for the Wasps, including 11-of-12 from the free throw line, and teammate Mike Brown contributed 18.

Wiscombe believes that despite the heartbreaking loss, his team is ready for Region 11 play, which begins Friday.

"I think we're there," Wiscombe said. "We can compete with the best teams in the state. We've just got to get over the hump."

* ROWLAND HALL-ST. MARK'S 53, ST. JOSEPH 43: At Ogden, the Jayhawks continue to experience growing pains, falling to the 2-A Winged Lions.

Daniel Philpot finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks, while Joe Panushka added 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocked shots.

Matt Bossart topped RHSM with 16 points.

St. Joseph (3-6) has two more games before Region 17 play tips off.

* SALEM HILLS 62, BEN LOMOND 61: At Salem, the Scots ran out of gas and suffered their first loss of the season.

"I guess we'd rather lose a preseason game than a league game," Ben Lomond coach Ryan Wilcox said. "I think this will help us get back focused on region play."

Ben Lomond led by 16 points at halftime, and took an 11-point lead early in the fourth, but the taller Skyhawks battle back. It was close in the final four minutes, with the Scots working for a final shot before turning the ball over.

Joseph Mohrman led Salem Hills with 17 points.

Keegan Border scored 22, Dalton Zundel added 16 and Andy Hopson chipped in with 15 for Ben Lomond (10-1).
