SLIDESHOW: Fremont vs. Davis high school basketball
PLAIN CITY -- It only counts as one win, but what a home-court victory for the Silver Wolves.
Despite kissing off a 16-point lead with 7:38 remaining in regulation and continually misfiring from the free-throw line in double-bonus situations, Fremont still dealt four-time defending league champion Davis High just its fourth Region 1 setback since the 2005-06 season.
"(Josh) Van Weezep got hot; he's a great shooter," Fremont junior point guard Patrick Fishburn said. "He was getting a lot of picks, so it was tough to get him locked down."
Van Weezep splashed in four 3-pointers in the Darts' 27-point fourth quarter and Kyle Smith's layup with 3.9 seconds left tied the score 64-all and forced overtime.
The Silver Wolves outscored Davis 11-7 in the four-minute overtime Friday, escaping with a 75-71 win in the Wolf Den.
"We had to guard their guards and limit turnovers," said the 17-year Fishburn, who is playing with a broken bone in the ball of his left foot.
"I'm probably only 75-80 percent," he said. "I don't feel it when I'm handling the ball, but it hurts now. I ice my foot a lot and take painkillers and swelling pills."
Fishburn scored a team-high 18 points on only 4-of-11 shooting -- he dropped in 9-of-10 free throws -- for the Silver Wolves, who extended their winning streak to five while snapping the Darts' five-game unbeaten streak.
Fisburn also grabbed a team-high five rebounds and dished off four assists for Fremont, which ended a six-game slide versus Davis with its first victory over the Darts since a 62-44 home-court win on Jan. 31, 2006.
"There is a lot of pressure, playing in front of a huge crowd for the league lead," Fishburn said. "I thought it would be a defensive-type game; Davis has a lot of good players. We're getting a little better each day, and beating a quality team like Davis will be great for our confidence."
Jacob Nish had 16 points and five boards for the Silver Wolves, who shot 51.2 percent (22-of-43) and outrebounded the Darts 29-24. Sophomore Brock Smith tossed in 11 points before fouling out at 2:20 of overtime.
Davis was 53-3 in Region 1 spanning the last four-plus seasons coming into Friday's game.
"You can't keep Davis down for a whole game; they are too well-balanced," Fremont coach Corey Melaney said. "We did leave the window open for them a little bit with our free throws, but we were still 75 percent (28-of-37)."
Tallon Burton scored a career-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting and he pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Darts, who shot 45.7 percent (21-of-46) and were 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from 3-point range.
Landon Horne had 14 points and seven boards and Van Weezep wound up with 13 points, draining 4-of-7 3-pointers for Davis, which is 7-6 against Fremont in the last 13 games.
