SYRACUSE -- Landon Horne is not just a burly, pass-catching tight end.

Sure, he was an integral part of the Darts' 2009 march to the state 5-A football championship game, but Horne is doing his part on the basketball court, too, as Davis High chases its fifth consecutive league title.

Horne, a senior power forward, scored a career-high 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting with two 3-pointers Tuesday in the Darts' 63-55 Region 1 victory over Syracuse.

"The offense was running good. We have a lot of capable scorers," the 18-year-old Horne said. "Everybody looks for the open man, so there is an opportunity for everybody to get their points."

Horne was 2-of-2 from 3-point range and he went 7-of-7 at the free-throw line for the Darts, who shot 90.5 percent (19-of-21) -- their second-highest percentage this season -- from the foul line.

"I grew up in the gym with coach (Jay) Welk and my dad, watching those good Davis programs build and being at their practices," Horne said. "It's fun playing for my dad, and when I go home I hear about what I have to do better. It's a good thing having him there."

Ben Horne is Landon's father and one of Welk's assistant coaches. Ben is also the Darts' junior varsity coach.

Davis, which is 5-0 versus the Titans, saw a 14-point lead with 6:48 remaining trimmed to four on Wade Rassmussen's 3-pointer at 29.1 seconds.

The Darts, who have won two straight and are 7-1 in their last eight games, converted 11-of-12 fourth-quarter free throws.

"We found some positives after the Fremont game (a 75-71 overtime road loss on Jan. 8)," Landon said. "We're looking to get better. We still think we can make good things happen in the second round; we're taking it one game at a time."

The Darts' Tallon Burton hit 6-of-10 shots and 5-of-5 free throws for 17 points to go along with a team-high seven boards. Josh Van Weezep scored 12 points with three assists and Kyle Smith had six rebounds, five assists and one steal for Davis, which got outscored 22-21 in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Phelps scored a team-high 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Titans, who shot 38.8 percent (19-of-49), including 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from 3-point range.

Nick Winegar wound up with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Jaxon Reid had 10 points, three boards, three assists and two steals for Syracuse, which dropped its second straight and is 2-4 in its last six games.

The Titans had nine turnovers leading to 10 Davis points.
