Bird festival art contest announced

FARMINGTON - The 12th Annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival announces and invites Utah students in grades K-12 to enter the Student Art Contest 2010.

Students can draw a color picture of an adult male Western Tanager by gathering ideas from bird field guides or other printed material. This contest is sponsored in part by the Davis County Commissioners' Cup Golf Tournament.

Contest entries are due by 5 p.m. on April 1. Categories for cash prizes include Grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. An overall "Best of Show" image will also be chosen by a panel of judges and that artwork will be featured on the 2011 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival's promotional documents, news releases, and clothing.

Winners will be announced at the Quackers and Cheese Reception on Friday, May 14 at 5:45 pm at the Davis County Legacy Events Center in Farmington, Utah.

There are many opportunities for youth to be involved with birds, crafts, and art at the Festival. Ogden Nature Center, Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, HawkWatch International, and SkyMasters will be talking about their live birds. Home Depot, Centerville is sponsoring a bird house craft activity. Saturday, May 15th, will have many activities for youth along with artists and vendors, field trips and workshops.
