KAYSVILLE -- A huge sigh of relief that gushed from the Davis gymnasium Friday evening could be heard all the way to Plain City.
With a key matchup against first-place Fremont looming on the horizon this coming Tuesday, Davis found itself down by 11 points against Viewmont midway through the third quarter.
But, energized by a 17-1 run, the Darts took a lead, then had to rally again in the closing seconds before finally capturing a 51-47 overtime thriller over the visiting Vikings.
Kyle Smith fueled the comeback with a three-point play to cut the lead to eight points with 4:01 left in the third and then drained a pair of free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining in the fourth stanza to send the game into overtime.
Trevor Webb buried a 3-pointer to open overtime and Smith added five points in the extra period to seal the win for the Darts.
"The play by Kyle got the fans back into it and the kids fed off of it," said Davis coach Jay Welk.
Viewmont let the game slip away from the free throw line, going 1-of-2 three times in the last 1:49 of regulation, while Davis made four straight in the last 11 seconds to tie it at 41.
Smith paced the Darts with 15 points and Josh Van Weezep added 12. Landon Horne also notched double digits with 11 counters.
For the Vikings, Sennett Fraughton scored 10 points and Eric North came off the bench to also check in with 10.
