Morgan grapplers make charge

OGDEN -- The Trojans and Bees led the North's march into state.

Morgan nearly unseated Wasatch in the 3-A North division wrestling tournament at Ben Lomond High School, while Box Elder and Mountain Crest racked up the points in the 4-A North divisional at Salt Lake City's Highland High School.

The Friday-Saturday tournaments set up seeding for next week's state wrestling tournaments at Utah Valley's McKay Events Center.

* 3-A NORTH: At Ben Lomond, Wasatch tallied 368 points, followed by Morgan (361 1/2 ) and Bear River (277). Ben Lomond (84) finished seventh.

Morgan got wins from Riley Eccles (119), Eduardo Patino (125), Matt Gallen (152) and Taylor Drennan (285), and runners-up efforts from Colton Walker (103), Cormick Brashears (130), Randen Borch (160), Connor Jensen (171) and Jackson Lake (215).

Bear River's Taylor Skinner won at 160 pounds, with Dallin Rollins (119) finishing second. Ben Lomond' Zach Boden won at 171 pounds, with Josh Harris (285) second.

The state 3-A tournament is Friday and Saturday at UVU.

* 4-A NORTH: At Highland, the Bees and Mustangs kept up the pressure with dominating performances.

Box Elder rolled up 618 points, followed by Mountain Crest with 471. Logan was third Region 5 team atop the standings with 225 points. Woods Cross finished ninth, with Bonneville 10th.

Region 5 entrants dominated Saturday's championship matches, including a pair of Bees squaring off at 285 and 125 pounds.

The Bees' Daniel Crook topped teammate Shane Hardy at heavyweight, while Cody Bunderson defeated Chase Peterson at 130 pounds. Weight class winners included Zach Harris (125) and Koleton Hardy (135).

Box Elder got seconds from Sean Smith (189), Levi Kearl (160), Nick Sorenson (140), and Alex Moore (103).

Leading Mountain Crest was Rayden Lindley (103), Zabinadi Smethurst (112), Corrick Knight (145), Raider Lofthouse (152) and Spencer Schwab (160).

Other top local finishers included Logan's Quinn Hinckley and Sky View's Justin Gaultier, 1-2 at 119 pounds, Sky View's Brayden Anderson, who won at 140 pounds, and Bonneville's Casey Stark, second at 112 pounds.

The state 4-A and 5-A tournaments are Wednesday through Friday at UVU.
