Mt. Crest, Logan win titles

PROVO -- While the state 5-A swimmers get ready to jump in the pool Friday and Saturday, Top of Utah schools brought home the hardware at last weekend's state 4-A championships.

In competition at BYU, the Mountain Crest boys and Logan girls claimed state championships with impressive team victories.

* 4-A: In the boys division, Mountain Crest topped Springville, with Box Elder a solid third, Bountiful seventh, Sky View eighth and Ogden 10th overall.

In the girls division, Logan won its first-ever state swimming crown, with Sky View fifth, Mountain Crest seventh and Woods Cross 10th.

Individually, Mountain Crest's Jake Taylor (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Timmy Bates (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) each won a pair of events and helped the Mustangs to wins in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Box Elder's Kallin Raymond was second in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, while teammate Ogden Douglas was fifth in the 50 freestyle. The two teamed up to help the Bees finish second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Bountiful's Kyler Hodgson won the 100 butterfly and was second in the 200 individual medley.

On the girls side, Logan's Jessica Gammill won the 200 and 500 freestyle races to lead the Grizzlies. Mountain Crest's Meghan O'Very was also a double winner, taking the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Sky View's 200 medley relay team finished second as well.

* 3-A: In the 3-A competition, the Judge Memorial girls and Park City boys took home state titles.

In the girls division, Park City was second with Wasatch third. Bear River took 10th overall.

In the boys division, Wasatch and Juan Diego followed Park City. Bear River finished eighth, with Ben Lomond 10th.

Individually, Ben Lomond's Talon Penman finished fourth in the 200 individual medley, while Bear River's Jason Jennings was fifth in the 200 freestyle.

The state diving championships are set for Thursday at BYU. The girls final is set for 9 a.m.; the boys final is set for noon.

The state 5-A meet is Friday at 5 p.m., followed by action beginning at noon on Saturday.
