Darts down Silver Wolves, grab share of Region 1 lead

SLIDESHOW: Fremont vs Davis

KAYSVILLE -- Three league games remaining and the co-leaders have defeated each other on its home floor.

Fueled by a season-high 61.1 percent shooting (22-of-36) Tuesday, four-time defending Region 1 champion Davis High gave veteran coach Jay Welk his 295th career victory with a decisive 62-44 win over the Silver Wolves.

The Darts, who are 61-4 in Region 1 since the 2005-06 season, also swept their 32nd consecutive homecourt league victory.

"This was our best game of the season," Davis senior power forward Landon Horne said. "We're hitting our stride and looking to play our best basketball down the stretch."

The 18-year-old Horne, who has signed with Snow College in football, scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting -- hitting 3-of-7 3-point attempts -- while dropping in 5-of-5 free throws. He also had two rebounds, three assists and a steal in 30 minutes.

"I don't know what got into me; I must have eaten something good," he said.

Taking a page from Darts defensive coordinator Tyler Gladwell, Horne had two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Tuesday. One for lunch and another before the game.

"I guess I'll have to stick with it," he said. "We picked up the intensity on the defensive end. We knew if we shut them down defensively, that would lead to our offense."

Davis, which has the league bye Friday, won its eighth consecutive game and leads Fremont 8-6 in the last 14 games.

Nish scored a team-high 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds for the Silver Wolves, who went 16-of-45 (35.6 percent) from the floor, but only 1-of-6 from 3-point range (16.7 percent).

Fishburn finished with seven points while going 3-of-9 from the floor. Lewis scored just two points in 14 minutes for Fremont, which had its 12-game winning steak snapped.

Tallon Burton put in 13 points with a game-high nine boards for the Darts. Burton had the 6-foot-6 Lewis on the defensive end.

Point guard Kyle Smith had eight points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals for Davis, which shot a season-high 50.0 percent (7-of-14) on 3-point attempts.
