Top of Utah swimmers battle SLC powerhouses

PROVO -- While Region 1 schools found themselves quite a ways down the final leaderboard, several Top of Utah swimmers made waves at the state 5-A swimming and diving championships.

The two-day meet concluded on Saturday at Brigham Young University's pool.

Brighton's girls and boys teams dominated with depth and speed, sweeping the 5-A titles.

Prep Swimming

Brighton tallied 366 points on the girls side, followed by Alta (249), Lone Peak (243) and Skyline (227). Region 1 champion Viewmont was ninth (83) with Layton 11th (65).

Layton senior Elizabeth Thompson won the 50-yard freestyle on Friday, swimming in 24.53 seconds. Thompson also finished second in the 100 backstroke

Viewmont's Jil Whiting was eighth in the 100 breaststroke, with Layton's Kourtney Harris 10th. The Vikings' 200 medley relay was fourth overall.

On the boys side, the Bengals had 349 points, followed by American Fork (218), Bingham (191.5) and Skyline (177). Davis (115), with Region 1 champion Viewmont (74) 13th.

Weber senior Tyler Condie broke through in his specialty, winning the 100 freestyle in 48.24 seconds. Davis senior Alex Heder was eighth, with Syracuse's Paul Crowley ninth.

Condie was third in the 50 freestyle, with Davis senior Alex Heder fifth.

Davis sophomore Zach Santella was fourth in the 200 individual medley, and sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

Viewmont's Corban Bothell was fourth in the 200 freestyle, and seventh in the 500 freestyle. Weber's Drake Mendelson was ninth in the 500 freestyle.

Davis' boys were fourth in the 200 freestyle relay, with Weber fifth. In the 400 freestyle relay, Weber was seventh, with Davis eighth. In all, there were five state records set on the boys side of the meet.

Thursday in the all-classes diving meet, also staged at BYU's pool, Park City's Haley Ehlers won the individual title, followed by Alta's Annie Dewall and Park City's Brook Johnson.

Bear River's Rachel Green finished 11th, with Box Elder's Katie Stratton 13th.

On the boys side, West's Nathan Markarewicz won the meet, followed by Jordan's Jordan Tuckfield, Trayton Speth and Dane Dulaney.

The weekend action capped Utah's prep swimming season. A week earlier, the Mountain Crest boys and Logan girls claimed the state 4-A team championships, while the Judge Memorial girls and Park City boys won the state 3-A team championships.
