Soccer, softball seasons underway

Ready or not, the spring portion of Utah prep scene goes full throttle this week.

Region 1 soccer and softball kick off the league portions of their schedule today, with nearly every Top of Utah high school set to play games.

"I'm not sure you can really, but I feel really good," said Layton High School boy soccer coach Rick Talamantez. "We got done with tryouts on Thursday and it snowed on Friday, and then we play on Tuesday. It happens pretty fast. The boys seem really excited to start playing."

The Lancers, last year's 5-A runner-up in boys soccer, kick off their season with a home contest against Weber. Defending league champion Davis opens at Nothridge.

"We are about as ready as any team who only gets a handful of practices before the start of region can be," Davis coach Soulivanh Phongsavath said.

"I'm excited for the season to begin. I'm optimistic that we can compete in each game."

In softball, a powerhouse game between defending Region 1 champion Syracuse and defending state 4-A and Region 5 champion Roy kicks off the slate. The Titans were the last high school team to defeat the Royals, winning 2-0 at home, before Roy raced its way to the state title.

Region 1 baseball and most of the other local teams move into region play next week, dodging spring storms along the way.
