NORTH OGDEN -- Keeping the ball down in the strike zone is imperative against the Warriors.
Fremont senior right-hander Kylee Colvin did not do that early Thursday against Weber High, but she was effective after returning in the fifth inning, tossing three scoreless innings of one-hit ball.
"I didn't want to let my team down," said the 17-year-old Colvin, who has signed with Salt Lake Community College. "I was more focused and ready to go. I was nervous when they tied it 7-7. You never want your rival to beat you."
Fremont used a seven-run third inning, adding four runs over the last two innings to drop the Warriors 11-7 in a Region 1 softball game at Lomond View Park.
"That's a good hitting Weber team," Fremont coach Jim Fuller said. "I knew Weber was tough after the way they hit the ball on Tuesday. (Cydnee) Clarke is as tough an out as this region has had in years.
"This is as fine of a hitting team as I've seen at Weber High in 20 years," he said. "We had trouble putting it past them; they were tough. One big inning was the difference; it was big."
The Silver Wolves (2-0 overall, 1-0 league) sent 11 batters to the plate in the third. They had six hits, including two doubles, and two walks.
"Once things start rolling, everybody comes up to bat," Fuller said. "We had decent defense today, and it's hard to play region games when you haven't had a chance to see what your team is."
Fremont leadoff batter Meagan Neilson went 3-for-4 with a walk and scored two runs. Mariah Winslow had a two-run single; Jyl Eckstein drilled a two-run double; Trish Bodily was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run; and Karlie Kennedy went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a walk and a run for the Silver Wolves.
"We got upset with Kylee. She was rushing her pitches and missing her spots up," Fuller said. "We wanted the ball low. We challenged Kylee and she responded. I hate walks; they're like castor oil, just yucky. Jyl had three walks, and that's why we brought Kylee back."
The Warriors' Nicole Weiss went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a solo home run. Clarke was 4-for-4 with a double and a run; Mandy Barney went 2-for-4 with a triple; Taylor Stroud was 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run; and Haylee Pardo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for Weber (1-1, 1-1), which had 14 hits.
* SYRACUSE 13, NORTHRIDGE 1 (FIVE INNINGS): At Northridge High, right-handers Ashley Ostler and Taylor Tann combined on a two-hitter with eight strikeouts, no walks and a hit batter.
The Titans' Sylvanna Kelley went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs. Ostler was 2-for-2 and Tann smacked a solo home run for Syracuse (1-1, 1-0).
Carley Thompson went 2-for-2 with a triple and Abby Budge had a run-scoring sacrifice for the Knights (0-2, 0-2).
* DAVIS 8, LAYTON 3: At Kaysville, senior right-handers Chessie Roth and McKenzy MacKay combined for 13 Ks with only two walks.
MacKay went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run. Cheyne Moffett had a two-run single that tied the score 3-all; Ali Smith had an RBI single; and Amanda Taylor had a sacrifice fly for the Darts (2-0, 2-0).
Mckenna Morgan had a two-run shot for the Lancers (0-2, 0-2).
* VIEWMONT 11, CLEARFIELD 0 (FIVE INNINGS): At Bountiful Junior High, junior right-hander Megan Peay fanned 11 for the Vikings (1-0, 1-0).
The Falcons are 0-2, 0-1.
