SYRACUSE -- Gusting winds and ashy air plagued track and field athletes at the Davis District and Harry Burchell City-County meets yesterday. But like the post office motto, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."
TRACK AND FIELD
* DAVIS: The Davis District meet held 11 finals. In the four running finals, Davis High athletes put their heads into the wind and scored a multitude of points in the first day. In the girls 1,600 meters, Davis went 2-3 and 5-6-7-8, led by Meghan Hedquist. In the boys 3,200 meters, Davis went 2-3-4, led by Logan Petty. In the the 4x800, it was both boys and girls Davis teams that claimed the win.
While Davis used numbers to dominate, the 1,600 and the 3,200 were actually won by Syracuse runners. In the 3,200 meters, Austin Costley won, and in the girls 1,600, Hannah Williams led from the gun, pushing her way through the blustering wind to win in 5:37.
"It was bad," said Williams. "It felt like I was walking that back stretch. I wasn't going for time with this wind, but I wanted to get first and have a stronger finish."
In field event finals, the wind proved even trickier. Throwing into a fierce headwind, Bountiful's Karen Wilkinson was still able to toss a 105-foot javelin throw to win, but in run-throughs sprained her ankle.
Wilkinson was also second in the shot put behind Syracuse's Jessica Pauni.
* CITY-COUNTY MEET: In the City-County meet, Ogden girls suffered a bit of bad luck along with the wind. Sprinter Kia Wilson, who won state as a freshman, pulled a hamstring in the 100, effectively ending their bid to win the two-day meet. Despite that loss, Ogden girls lead the point spread after the first day of the meet 28-18, due to their strong finishes in the 1,600 meters and the long jump.
In the 1600 Avery Calton and Jamie Stokes went 1-2 running 5:27.05 and 5:27.62, respectively. Lauren Crockett was second in the long jump behind Roy's Sam Morris, who jumped 16-1.5 to win.
In the boys 1,600, Ben Lomond's Dalton Zundel ran 4:37.85 to edge Ogden's Jacob Barton.
Zundel was also second in the high jump behind Fremont's Jaz Johnston. They both jumped 6-0, Johnston just had fewer scratches.
In other field event finals, Ben Lomond's Anna Moulding won the shot put with a 37-11 throw; Fremont's Ben Johnson won the discus with 163-0 and was fifth in the javelin; and Bonneville's Zack Koger won the javelin in 151-4.
Finals for all other running, throwing and jumping events are scheduled to be completed today, starting at 3 p.m. at both sites.
