NWSL sees mixed results in startup season

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Thorns’ season couldn’t be going any better. They’re sitting atop the National Women’s Soccer League’s opening-season standings and drawing more than 11,000 fans to home games. And they’ve got Alex Morgan.

But just a few hours’ drive north, the Seattle Reign are struggling with a roster unexpectedly missing its star power, and with no wins and four total goals so far.

The two contrasting teams paint a picture common to many startups: successes and snags.

Kids learn soccer tips from Wildcats

OGDEN — The Weber State University women’s soccer team recently put on a grassroots clinic for the Ogden AYSO Region 351. The youth clinic was held on May 11 at Mount Ogden Park, with the Wildcats’ players and coaching staff working with numerous area youths.

The Double Decker class debuted Saturday at Rocky Mountain Raceways.

Jaworski serious about Tebow in AFL

PHILADELPHIA — Could it be Tebow Time in the Arena Football League?

Philadelphia Soul part owner Ron Jaworski said on Wednesday he was serious about his offer to former New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow to join the AFL team.

Jaworski, a former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, reached out to Tebow a day after the Jets released him in April. Jaworski has yet to hear from Tebow, but expects to eventually.

Many fishing options await Memorial Day anglers

For many families in Utah, fishing on Memorial Day weekend is a family tradition.

As this year’s weekend nears, Drew Cushing, warm water sport fisheries coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, said there are waters throughout the state that are easy to access and have large numbers of healthy fish.

Agent: Top pick Lotulelei signs with Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The agent for first-round draft pick Star Lotulelei says his client has signed a four-year contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Financial terms were not released. The deal includes a team option for a fifth season.

Bruce Tollner says Lotulelei, the 14th overall pick in the NFL draft, is “extremely excited to officially become a Panther.”
