Tigers, Lakers battle to draw

OGDEN -- With the stretch drive of the season kicking things into high gear, the battle for soccer points is especially critical inside Region 5.

With just three spots in next month's state 4-A boys soccer tournament up for grabs and five deserving teams, every result, every goal becomes that much more critical.

"I told my boys before the game that whoever wants to win today is going to," Ogden coach Sterling Castle said. "I was pleased with the intensity we played with."

Ogden's Alfonso Perea and Bonneville's Mitch Fackrell traded first-half goals and the two teams went the remaining distance without another, finishing in a 1-1 draw after 100 minutes at Mount Ogden Park.

Friday's Region 5 affair was a fast, furious and often physical one as the two squads played with a near-playoff level intensity.

Bonneville improved to 4-1-1 in league play (7-2-1 overall), narrowly staking its name atop the table with four games to play. Ogden is 2-2-1 (5-2-2) and is tied with Logan in fourth place, needing to gain five points on one of the top three teams in order to grab a playoff berth.

Perea did his part in trying to help Ogden get there, zipping an 18-yard free kick easily around the defensive wall in the 19th minute for a 1-0 lead.

Fackrell countered back in the 39th minute, leveling the scoreline after working a shot from the deep left corner across the goalmouth.

Overall, Bonneville was a little stronger in its chance creation and run of play, but Ogden did a solid job of forcing stretches of the game into its tempo.

"We sometimes get caught up in the go fast, fast fast mindset," Bonneville coach Mike Hickman said. "We did that against Mountain Crest and Box Elder, and again today. We need to have a little more patience on the field and work things around."

* LOGAN 1, BOX ELDER 0: At Brigham City, the Grizzlies stopped the league leaders.

Jamison Heartland scored the game's only goal.

In the other league game, Mountain Crest defeated Sky View 2-0.

Region 1

* DAVIS 2, VIEWMONT 0: At Bountiful, the Darts' Brackin Flitton earned his 10th consecutive shutout in goal as Davis knocked off the Vikings.

Casey Black scored his 5-A best 18th goal in the first half and Davis' got a boost after a Viewmont defender knocked the ball into the net in the second to move to 11-0-0 in Region 1 action.

Davis' shutout streak reached 803 consecutive minutes with the clean sheet, the third-best streak in state history behind the 2006 Brighton Bengals (11 games, 974 minutes) and 2004 Bonneville Lakers (10 games, 850-plus minutes).

Viewmont dropped to 9-3-0 with the loss.

Region 11

* BEN LOMOND 15, GRANTSVILLE 0: At Grantsville, the Scots' Luis Oseguera scored four times and Bryan Garay and Ian Woodbury each tallied two as Ben Lomond blasted past the Cowboys.

Ben Lovelady, Christian Cardenas, Keegan Burden, Paolo Gorritti, Salvador Gallegos, Zach Boden and Wes Leatherou each scored for the Scots, while Tyler Walters and Esteban Ortiz shared the shutout in goal.

* BEAR RIVER 3, MORGAN 1: At Morgan, the Bears' Everardo Lemus scored twice and Riley Steed added one as Bear River captured a road win over the Trojans to wrap up Region 11 action.

In the other game, Judge Memorial secured the league title by topping Juan Diego 1-0.
