Bonneville downs Olympus in 4-A

SLIDESHOW: Bonneville vs. Olympus prep boys soccer playoffs

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- There was no lack of motivation for the Lakers.

Taking to their home pitch against the team that ended their season a year ago, the Bonneville High School boys soccer team put on a dazzling display of soccer.

Senior forward Mitch Fackrell tallied a brace to help lead Bonneville to a decisive 4-1 victory over Olympus on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the state 4-A tournament.

"These guys knocked us out in the first round last year," Fackrell said. "This year was a turnaround to play in front of our fans. It's a big victory to get us into the next round.

The win sends surging Bonneville into Tuesday's semifinal round against Region 9 champion Dixie at Viewmont High School. It's the Lakers' fourth semifinal berth in the past five seasons.

"We're playing with a lot of confidence as a team," Fackrell said. "We just need to come out strong and play as a team.

"The first half we had a couple of opportunities that we could have finished. The second half we were pinging the ball around and got great finishes."

Fackrell scored the opening goal of the game in the 12th minute to give Bonneville the 1-0 lead at halftime. The Lakers (11-3-2) created plenty of other chances in the first half, but struggled to finish in the final third.

"We came out with a lot of energy and created a lot of chances," Bonneville coach Mike Hickman said. "Our seniors knew this could be their last game. They wanted to leave everything on the field."

After Olympus nearly tied the game in the opening minute of the second half, the Lakers' offense erupted behind goals from sophomore Gage Woodward, Fackrell and junior Kacey Abbott, taking a 4-0 lead into stoppage time.

"If we work hard and play the system that we play, we'll create a lot of chances; It's just finishing those chances," Hickman said. "Getting that early goal was huge. It took the pressure off our shoulders and allowed us to play more freely."

* DIXIE 2, BOX ELDER 0: At St. George, the Flyers scored twice in the second half to edge the Bees and advance.

Box Elder finished its season with a 9-5-1 overall record, staking claim to a share of just the second league soccer title in school history.

* WOODS CROSS 2, MOUNTAIN CREST 1: At Woods Cross, the Region 6 champion Leopards shot out to a 2-0 lead in the second half before the Mustangs pulled one back late.

5-A tournament

* FREMONT 5, COPPER HILLS 2: At West Jordan, the Silver Wolves controlled the field to perfection, surging into Tuesday's semifinals with an impressive road win and 12th in a row overall.

"We are really working well, controlling the midfield," Fremont coach Bryan Gines said. "Defensively, Austin Jex and Dillon Bishop did a really good job in the center of the field."

Fremont led 2-0 at the half, as Jordan Preator took a Corey Craynor pass and rammed it home, followed by Scott Chambers' tally.

Craynor scored to put Fremont ahead 3-0, then after Copper Hills got on the board, Jex assisted Craynor on his third goal of the day.

Chambers added a late goal, assisted by Preator.

The Silver Wolves (15-3-0), making their second-ever state 5-A semifinal appearance, will face Region 2 runner-up Murray in Tuesday's semifinal round at Woods Cross High School.

* DAVIS 3, BINGHAM 0: At Kaysville, the Region 1 champion Darts (17-1-0) sailed past the Miners and into their first semifinal round appearance since 2007.

Senior forward Casey Black tallied his 5-A best 27th goal of the season in the first half, while John Taylor and Scott Felsted each added one. Jake McRae had two assists.

Senior goalkeeper Brackin Flitton picked up his 13th shutout of the season in goal.

The Darts, who have now won a school-record 17 games, will face Region 2 champion Granger in Tuesday's semifinal round at Woods Cross High School.
