Lakers' Walter finishes second in 4-A tennis

SALT LAKE CITY -- There was a bit of a changing of the guard in prep boys tennis on Saturday.

Highland edged perennial power Timpview by a single point in the state 4-A tournament, claiming a victory that stopped the Thunderbirds' bid for eight straight wins.

Timpview's John Pearce outdueled Woods Cross' Matt Cowley in a thrilling three-set final at No. 1 singles at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.

Bonneville's Jay Walter made a run through the No. 2 singles play, winning a pair of matches on Friday, including a win over Box Elder's Michael Lundberg in the quarterfinals.

Watler topped Bountiful's Jaren Pattison in the semifinals, before losing to Highland's Chas Foote in two sets in the championship.

At No. 1 singles, Ogden's Jordan Hawkins lost in the opening round in a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (13-11) marathon, while Bonneville's Dylan Leiter won his opening-round match before falling in the quarterfinals.

At No. 3 singles, Box Elder's Peter Isaac won his opening round match before losing in the quarterfinals.

In the 3-A tournament at BYU's courts, Desert Hills edged Juan Diego for its first tennis title.

Ben Lomond's Jack Fogal won his first match at No. 1 singles on Friday before losing in the quarterfinals.

At No. 3 singles, Bear River's Greg Barton won a pair of matches to make it to Saturday's semifinals before losing.

At No. 1 doubles, both Morgan's Swish Wiscombe and Tim Wright and Bear River's Michael Holmgren and Ben Bitner won their first matches, with Wiscombe and Wright winning in the quarterfinals as well.

At No. 2 doubles, Bear River's Tyler Christiansen and Tim Bitner won a pair of matches to make an appearance in the semifinals.

Saturday's action put a wrap on the high school tennis season in the state.
