RSL settles for 1-1 tie with Chivas

SANDY -- While much of Saturday night's focus was on the return of veteran captain Kyle Beckerman from a stubborn foot injury, it was his replacement who finally cracked the wall.

Midfielder Ned Grabavoy hit a 18-yard screaming rebound into the upper corner of the net to put Real Salt Lake into the 67th minute lead and rivals RSL and Chivas finished in a 1-1 draw at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Chivas' equalizer, which game just three minutes after Grabavoy's score, was also scored by a substitution just moments after entering the match. The Goats' Jesus Padilla smashed a hard shot that eluded Real goalkeeper Nick Rimando's grasp and bounced into the goal.

While not gaining the full three points against the Western Conference's worst team, Real did extend its formidable unbeaten streak at Rio Tinto Stadium to 19 consecutive matches (14-0-5)

Out of action since injuring his foot in May 22, Beckerman -- Real's holding midfielder in its diamond midfield formation -- returned to the pitch and played a crisp, clean match while regaining the captain's armband. Grabavoy replaced Beckerman in the 63rd minute.

Typical of the series between the 2005 expansion rivals, the match featured numerous moments of chippy and downright testy play between the two sides.

Real dominted the first half statistically, outshooting Chivas 9-1. RSL didn't, however, possess the ball as well as it could have and struggled tactically to see the full width of the field on its attacks. That struggle often crowded play on one side of the field and allowed Chivas to more easily funnel Real's relentless offensive attack.

Chivas became the third team to take two points from Real at home this season and leads the all-time series between the sides 9-5-4.

* CREW 3, DYNAMO 0: At Columbus, Ohio, Emilio Renteria scored a gift goal in the first half and William Hesmer had his second straight shutout and eighth of the season as Columbus defeated Houston in Crew Stadium.

Andy Iro scored in the 84th minute and Leandre Griffit, two minutes into his MLS debut, added another in the 90th.

Columbus (10-3-4) is first Eastern Conference. Houston (5-8-4) is 0-4-3 in the past seven games. Renteria took advantage of a blunder by Houston backup goalkeeper Tally Hall in the 34th minute.

Hall backpedaled as he tried to field a ball outside the penalty area and fell. Renteria picked up the loose ball and scored easily.

Houston defender Bobby Boswell received a second yellow card with 18 minutes left.

* FC DALLAS 1, TORONTO FC 1: At Toronto, Milton Rodriguez scored in the 77th minute to give FC Dallas a draw.

The goal, assisted by David Ferreira, came after Dallas gained a corner kick on Toronto's sloppy defensive play. Maicon Santos scored in the 61st minute for Toronto.

Toronto is unbeaten at home this season at 5-0-4 and is 6-5-5 overall. Dallas is 6-2-8.

Toronto FC was coming off its first MLS loss in more than two months last week in Philadelphia.

Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made a highlight save in the 23rd minute, tipping a shot off a free kick by Dwayne De Rosario. Hartman came up with another big save in the 45th on Chad Barrett.

In first-half stoppage time, Nick LaBrocca's attempt was deflected over the goal by a defender.

Toronto's newest player, Miguel Angel Ferrer MartDinez entered the game in the 56th minute. Toronto FC's second designated player replaced Amadou Sanyang, who was shaken up in front of the Dallas goal after a corner kick.

Hartman stopped De Rosario's header in the 58th minute and Santos could not get the rebound. Three minutes later, Santos scored on a pass from Julian de Guzman. It was the first MLS goal for Santos for Toronto after he was picked up from Chivas USA on July 9.

* GALAXY 2, EARTHQUAKES 2: At Carson, Calif., Landon Donovan scored in the 90th minute to lift the Los Angeles Galaxy to a tie with San Jose on Thursday night.

Edson Buddle scored his 12th goal for the Galaxy (12-2-4), who extended their lead over second-place Real Salt Lake to 10 points in the Western Conference.

Bobby Convey and Brandon McDonald scored for the Earthquakes (6-4-5), who extended their unbeaten streak to six games against all opponents.

Donovan tied the score with a 1-yard shot. Tristan Bowen began the sequence with a pass from the right flank that goalkeeper Jon Busch fielded off his chest. After Buddle failed to convert the loose ball, Donovan pounced on it.

Convey gave San Jose a 1-0 lead in the second minute.

with a diagonal 14-yard shot inside the right post. The goal was Convey's first since April 2009.

Buddle tied the score in the 59th minute on a 3-yard shot. McDonald's 4-yard shot in the 72nd minute put the Earthquakes ahead, 2-1.
