Chukars dismantle Ogden's streak in 17-3 romp

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -- All good things must come to an end.

The Ogden Raptors learned the reality of this phrase after their four-game winning streak came to a crashing halt with a 17-3 loss to Idaho Falls at Melaleuca Field on Thursday night.

Carlos Frias (2-5) had a rough start on the mound for Ogden as Idaho Falls scored two pitches into the bottom of the first.

Lane Adams led off with a first pitch single then came around to score on a Yowill Espinal triple. The RBI was Espinal's 18th of the season, and he would score two pitches later on a wild pitch by Frias.

Ogden's offense sputtered to a start in the top of the third when Pedro Tavarez knocked a base hit to left field and Leon Landry followed up with a single of his own. Tavarez would finish the night as the highlight of the Raptor offense, going 4 for 4.

League batting average leader Jake Lemmerman (.380) brought Tavarez home with a two-out double, logging his 16th RBI of year and putting Ogden on the board.

Things on the mound didn't improve for the Raptors as J.J. Whetsel came in to relieve Frias with one out in the fourth.

Whetsel's first batter -- Thomas Zebroski -- crushed a three-run shot over the right field fence, putting the Chukars up 5-1.

Things got worse as Espinal and Adams both came around to score on a Chelsor Cuthbert double and Murray Watts punched a one-out, two-run dinger to left center. The shot was his sixth of the year.

Watts took sole possession of the league lead in RBI's with the homer, logging his 32nd and 33rd on the season. The Chukars would finish the fourth scoring nine earned runs, giving them an 11-1 lead.

Up 12-1 with the bases loaded in the fifth, Idaho Falls tacked on another run as Watts made his way home on a wild pitch from Rick Rivas.

Kevin David would score two more with his sixth double on the year, making it 15-1, Idaho Falls.

Idaho Falls added two more insult runs as Ogden took their biggest defeat of the season.

The Raptors (23-14) look for redemption tonight on the road against Idaho Falls (15-22) in the final game of a two-game series.

Tonight's game also marks the end of the first-half season, which the Raptors have won to earn a spot in the Pioneer League playoffs at the end of the season.

The second-half season begins on Saturday with the first game of a two-game series at Casper against the Ghosts. The Raptors return home on Monday to open a three-game series against Idaho Falls.

In other Raptor news, pitcher Greg Wilborn has been called up to play with the Great Lakes Loons, the Single-A (Low A) partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers who play in Midland, Mich.

Wilborn. who had a 4-0 record this season with the Raptors, struck out 10 batters during Tuesday's win over Missoula.
