Ogden's Blair has shot in Oregon golf tourney

EUGENE, Ore. -- With three rounds complete in the Pacific Coast Amateur at Eugene Country Club, Ogden's Zac Blair is in strong contention for medalist honors.

Blair is tied for sixth, with rounds of 72-70-72-214, two shots out of second place. Andrew Putnam, of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association, has a five-shot lead with rounds of 68-69-70-207.

Robert McRae is tied for 37th and Joe Parkinson is tied for 50th. They got off to great starts with rounds of 68 and 69, respectively, but they were well off those marks during the second and third rounds. McRae shot 79-77 and Parkinson has had back-to-back 79s.

The tournament also serves as the Morse Cup competition, and the trio of Utahns led after the first round but fell back to fifth after three rounds.

In the Trusted Choice Big "I" National Championship at Chesterfield, N.J., the Utah contingent is in the middle of the pack after three rounds.

Ogden's Patrick Fishburn sat at 228, good enough for 39th place. Farmington's Taylor Haws is at 231, with Alta's Kenny You at 232.

Following the round, tournament organizers held the Patrick Cannon Memorial Long Drive Championship. Fishburn outdrove the boys by 12 yards with a 357-yard shot, a record. Fishburn now holds two Big "I" records, the longest drive and the lowest single-round score, 63, from last year's third round. Stani Schiavone, of Bangor, Penn., took home the girls' trophy with a 282.5-yard drive down the middle of the fairway.

In the Junior America's Cup boys tournament at Albuquerque, N.M., Southern California ran away with the team title by 13 shots at 21-under par.

Utah was seventh at 638.

On the individual side, Oregon's Zach Foushee strung together rounds of 70, 68 and 66 to sneak in under the wire for the win.

Clearfield's Devon Purser shot one of the best rounds of the day, a third-round 64 to jump up to fourth place overall. Layton's Jonathon Thomas and Brandon Kida finished at 217, with Syracuse's Brennan Coburn at 226.

Hawaii won the 2010 Girls Junior Americas Cup by three shots over Oregon and by 75 shots over 14th-place Utah at Morgan Run Resort near San Diego.

Hawaii's opening round of 211 was the best round of the entire tournament and staked Hawaii to a lead that it never relinquished. Three of the Hawaiin team members finished in the top five.

The Utah team was led by South Ogden's Lea Garner, with three rounds in the 70s. Sirene Blair was at 237, Heather Mathison was at 253 with Hannah Herman at 264.
