WSU hoops squad snags early commitment

OGDEN -- Mike Brown is excited to relax during his senior season at Wasatch High School.

The 6-foot-3 guard, who led the Wasps to the state 3-A boys basketball title this past season as a junior, has verbally agreed to sign a national letter of intent to play basketball at Weber State.

"I know a lot of guys from my high school who have gone to Weber State and they really liked it," Brown said.

One of those former Wasps, post player Darin Mahoney, gave Brown some encouraging words about Weber State.

"Darin told me he likes living up there in Ogden and he enjoys playing for the team," Brown said. "Obviously Weber is one of best teams in Big Sky Conference and I'm excited to play there."

Brown averaged 17.1 points and 4.5 assists per game last season, and scored 22 points in Wasatch's win over Judge Memorial in the state championship game. Following the season Brown got some interest from schools such as Utah State and Lafayette, but WSU really stood out for him. Especially WSU coach Randy Rahe and the Wildcat coaching staff.

"I didn't know what to expect from college coaches because this is all new to me," Brown said. "I wasn't sure how tough and strict they'll be, but I was surprised with how kind they were."

Brown said he will ink his NLI in November during the early-signing period.
