Utah broadcaster Chris Tunis dies

 

SALT LAKE CITY -- Longtime Utah sports broadcaster Chris Tunis has died of cancer. He was 54.

Tunis was a fixture in the state's sports broadcasting world for nearly 30 years, spending the last decade as the play-by-play announcer for University of Utah women's basketball. He died Monday.The school announced his death Tuesday in a statement from athletic director Chris Hill, who noted Tunis' professionalism and upbeat personality. Hill called it a sad day for the many friends Tunis made during his distinguished career.

"Tuner," as he was known by his colleagues, was named Utah Broadcaster of the Year seven times.

He is survived by his wife, Julie, and daughter Jacqueline.
