As the final area girls soccer teams head into their respective league action this week, what will 2010 bring?
In Region 5, which gets under way today, it appears that defending league champ Bonneville and Sky View are set for season-long battle.
Bonneville (3-0-0) and Sky View (5-0-1) face each other today in Smithfield, with the Bobcats being the only league opponent to knock off the Lakers last season.
Bonneville is led by BYU-bound forward Jaiden Thornock, who has three goals. Lexie Grilz also has three for the Lakers and four other players have found the back of the net.
Young Box Elder is an impressive 4-0-0 so far.
In Region 11, look for another strong season from a league that swept through the state playoffs last year. Four Region 11 teams comprised the four semifinalists in 3-A last fall, with Morgan advancing to the title game. Bear River also made the semis, where it lost to champ Juan Diego.
In Region 14, St. Joseph has played in consecutive state 2-A title games and appears poised to make a run at a third with stars Joanna Matyjasik and Ivee Barton leading the way. Matyjasik leads the Jayhawks (4-0-0) with five goals, with Jane Porter also tallying five. Goalkeeper Breanne DeMar has posted three shutouts.
* REGION 1: A fierce three-way battle appears to be unfolding between three-time defending league champion Davis, runner-up Fremont and Viewmont.
The Silver Wolves (5-0-0), armed with 10 returning starters from 2009's 15-2-2 squad, appear to be the early favorite. The Darts (5-0-0), who are 54-7-0 overall and 45-4-0 in league play since the start of the 2007 season, are battling injuries.
Weber, which missed the postseason for the first time in school history, is quickly rebounding under first-year coach Sheena Bailey, who has Weber sitting at 4-2-0 overal. Syracuse (3-2-) is also making a strong push.
