Lakers eclipse last season's victory total

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The Lakers are talented and deep; Christian Heritage is young and inexperienced after a 28-8 season in 2009.

So, it was no surprise that Bonneville swept the Crusaders 25-23, 25-19, 25-16 in 65 minutes Tuesday in non-league volleyball.

"We have two girls who transferred from Christian Heritage, so we thought there could be a rivalry and they're a school from the area," Bonneville coach Angie Williams said. "I was most happy with our serving. We're working on not only getting it over, but being tougher. But with that also comes more errors. I can live with nine service errors, if we have 15 aces."

After a non-state 4-A tournament season and just five victories in 2009, Williams says this could be the Lakers' year.

"We have eight seniors and they all play," she said. "If they have the confidence they should have, they're awesome. Last year, teams said we were scary to play because we lacked maturity and were too up and down.

"I see that maturity, confidence and leadership this year," said Williams, in her fifth year at Bonneville. "All-around, this is the best team I've had and the most cohesive. We're a really good hitting team and our blocking can dominate. We have two great defensive players in Taylor Stuart and libero Shelby Cravens. They're amazing and can get a lot of balls up."

The Lakers' Hannah Schorr had nine kills, two solo blocks, one block assist and five digs. Mackenzie Stevens had seven kills, three solo blocks and one block assist; Amber Hancock had five kills, five solo blocks, two digs and six aces; setter Taylor Wood had 10 assists; and freshman setter Elora Penrod had nine assists, a block assist and one ace for Bonneville (6-5 overall).

The Crusaders' McKenzi Yocus had four kills and one solo block; freshman Kristi Rhead had three kills, eight digs and four assists; Ally Ellis had nine digs; Kelly Roberts had six digs; and setter Paige Shadbolt had five assists for Region 17 tournament champion Christian Heritage (2-1), which has just four returnees on the varsity and JV levels.

* BEN LOMOND DEF. ROWLAND-HALL ST. MARK'S 25-16, 25-22, 25-22: At Salt Lake City, the Scots' Lindsey James had 10 kills, one solo block, four digs and seven service points; Teja Mangum had 10 kills, three solo blocks, two digs, three aces and 13 service points; Chelsea Silva had two kills, three solo blocks, six aces and 14 service points; and setter McKenzey Bingham had 22 assists, four solo blocks, two block assists and seven service points for Ben Lomond (2-0), which had 13 aces and nine service errors.

* BEAR RIVER DEF. OGDEN 25-14, 29-27, 25-6: At Ogden High, the Tigers' Kelsey Christopulos and Lauren Crockett each had three kills and one solo block and setter Aly Stephenson had eight assists and two digs for Ogden (1-1).

The Bears are 8-2.
