ROY -- The previous games haven't been much to look at between the Bonneville Lakers and the Roy Royals, with Bonneville winning the last three with no problems.
However, while those scores were spot on, Friday's 21-6 win for the Lakers wasn't without its moments. The score is slightly deceiving, considering that Bonneville scored with just over a minute left in the game, which up to that point had left the game in doubt.
"I knew that they were going to give us a fight and they (Roy) played hard," Bonneville coach Matt Williams said. "(The kids) thought that they were going to come into the game and Roy was just going to roll over for us. They should know that they can't just show up for a game any night because we are going to get a game from everyone."
"We knew we could run the ball and with getting Chase Shaw more touches, we had a chance to control the game. But it's a rivalry game and the records never matter when these two teams get together."
Bonneville started strong, taking the opening kickoff 74 yards and capping that drive with a 5-yard touchdown run from Shaw for the 7-0 lead. Roy drove the length of the field, only to turn the ball over on downs near the red zone.
After the Royals held the Lakers to a punt on their next drive, running back Jake Trujillo took over for Roy and played some quarterback in the "Wildcat" attack, picking up big chunks of yards next to his counterpart Hunter Grimes. Trujillo scored from two yards out on a quarterback option, but the Royals failed to convert the extra point, as the Lakers led 7-6 at halftime.
Roy marched down the field again to start the third quarter, but an interception in the red zone cut that drive short. Bonneville scored again at the close of the third quarter when Shaw found a cutback lane for a 36-yard touchdown jaunt and a 14-6 lead.
Boston Nelson put the finishing touches on the game with a nine-yard bootleg to complete the scoring.
Shaw led the Lakers with 19 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Beck Nelson had two interceptions for Bonneville defensively. Trujillo helped the Royals with 16 carries for 67 yards and a score.
* SYRACUSE 28, VIEWMONT 10: At Syracuse, quarterback Tyler Jacobsen got the job done on the ground and in the air for the Titans with one rushing touchdown and three more through the air.
The Vikings grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but Syracuse scored 28 unanswered points en route to the victory.
Diante Mitchell, Jonah Lewis and Shane Russell all had touchdown catches for the Titans.
