Prep football: Morgan scores early to cruise past Wasatch

MORGAN -- For years the Wasatch Wasps have given Morgan fits on the football field. On Friday, the Trojans paid them back.

With a surprisingly efficient passing game and their usual bruising rushing attack, the Trojans ran all over the Wasps, 49-15, to remain undefeated through three preseason games.

Known for its running game, Morgan shocked the Wasps six plays into the first quarter when junior quarterback Colby Skinner found tight end Jed Rowlan wide open for a 47-yard touchdown pass.

Two possessions later, the Trojans ran the exact same play and got nearly the same result. This time Rowlan, every bit as open as the time before, went 63 yards before Wasatch's Alex Probst finally ran him down at the 4-yard line. Randon Prochnow ran it in from there to give Morgan a 14-0 lead.

"Teams like to load the box (on defense), but our quarterback's pretty accurate," Morgan coach Kovi Christiansen said.

Early in the second quarter, Skinner found Lawson Toomer over the middle for a 20-yard TD pass and the Wasps were down 21-0 before they knew what hit them.

"Wasatch is solid and they're gonna do well," Christiansen said. "But I think we caught them off guard a little with our passing in the first half."

The Trojans gave up a couple of quick touchdown passes in the second quarter and a safety in the third period, but were otherwise in control.

Tad Sargent rushed the ball 17 times for 117 yards and touchdown for Morgan, which also got touchdowns from Robbie Nelson (86-yard kickoff return) and Graham Mortensen (16-yard fumble return). Prochnow added a second TD run from 10 yards out midway through the fourth to finish off the scoring. The Trojans also forced six Wasatch turnovers, including four interceptions.
