WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Soccer matches between Bonneville and Mountain Crest tend to be defensive-minded, fiesty affairs, but Tuesday's Region 5 battle turned downright ugly.
Two players were sent off with straight red cards late in the match and Bonneville's Jaiden Thornock tallied her second goal of the game with two minutes left to break a 1-1 tie and give the Lakers a much-needed 2-1 victory.
"It was just another tough game between two good teams," Bonneville coach Layne Barker said. "We couldn't find any rhythm offensively and really struggled to get much going in the first half. We didn't change formations in the second half -- we just moved the ball better."
Both teams found it tough to get anything going, though Mountain Crest seemed to create the better chances as the visiting team. Only a couple of good chances came in the first half with the Mustangs having their best opportunity on a shot from senior forward Morgan Olsen that sailed over the bar.
In the second half, the game opened up a little more, with Thornock taking a long distance shot that missed the left side of the goal. A struggle between the Mustangs' Makelle Eggleston and the Lakers' Kami Deeb ended up in fisticuffs and both girls were ejected to bring the teams down to 10 players each.
With both teams pressing to score the opening goal, it was Thornock that landed the first blow. She found her way to a ball that was saved by Mountain Crest goalie Kjersty Cook on a shot from inside the box and turned a defender around before knocking it home to the near post side for the 1-0 lead.
Mountain Crest was able to tie the game on a goal from Marsela Murillo in the 70th minute before the game-winner from Thornock on a glancing header crossed in from Bailey White with seven minutes left to seal the victory.
