GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The acceptance of the Cal Poly and UC Davis football programs into the Big Sky Conference has the University of North Dakota pondering its future.
Cal Poly and UC Davis currently compete in the Great West Football Conference, which UND also calls home. The Grand Forks Herald says the Fighting Sioux also are looking for stability for their program.
Southern Utah University would also likely be looking as well.
Big Sky commissioner Doug Fullerton said the decision to add Cal Poly and UC Davis is the first part of an expansion plan that could lead to a 12-team football conference with two six-team divisions. For that to happen, the Big Sky would need to add a 12th school.
UND athletic director Brian Faison said the school is continuing to weigh its options. UND already has applied for membership in The Summit League, but that league does not offer football.
