Teams battle for derby supremacy

LAYTON -- Utah's first roller derby tournament, Saturday's Mountain Throwdown, brought together three of the state's four flat-track women's roller derby leagues at the Davis Conference Center provided epic battle to find the best in Utah.

The tournament was followed by a free after party, open to all skaters and guests.

The Mountain Throwdown featured O-Town Derby Dame's "25th Street Brawlers" (in pink), Junction City Roller Doll's "Trainwrecks" (in teal), and Salt Lake's Salt City Derby Girl's "Shakers" (in yellow).

The girls played three 30-minute bouts to determine which two teams would clash for the final hour-long full-length bout.

The first bout starred O-Town's 25th Street Brawlers versus Junction City's Trainwrecks. Before the half point mark JCRD's Colonol Skirts scored a 25-point jam, and won 84-27.

Next, the Salt City Shakers challenged the Junction City Trainwrecks for a half hour of hard-hitting, action-packed, lead-swapping entertainment. Tensions rose during the final minutes of the game. With Salt's blocker duo Miss Mafiosa and Phatal Pheromone, JCRD's jammer Zelda Cruz had a difficult time breaking through to tie up the game to 47-47 with 40 seconds left. The last jam was an electrifying, nail-biting, sweat-inducing, no-lead, 2-minute mini-drama. With blockers and jammers flying in and out of the penalty box from both teams the crowd was jumping out of their seats screaming instructions and encouragement. Salt City's jammer RollerHer Kitty brought the Shakers to a win by one single tie-breaking point ending the game at 56-55.

The third bout consisted of big point jams and lots of pack splitting between O-Town's Brawlers and the fired-up Shakers. The game started off with a 38-0 lead for Salt before O-Town's Smashleigh could get through the pack for a full 4 points. The score reached 86-39 Salt when Carnage Kitten began jamming against Salt City's China White and Moon Raker. O-Town's Starbright Wanna Fight was taken out with an ankle injury stopping the game. After the Shakers scored mercilessly, hardly allowing the Brawlers to score. Salt City came out with a 124-53 lead.

The final Throwdown featured winning teams Junction City Trainwrecks and Salt City Shakers. The first five jams were just as intense and close as their previous match but Salt City's China White and Moon Raker soon began scoring double-digit jams while preventing Junction's jammers from getting through the pack. Junction managed to squeeze out a few points throughout the second half ending the game at 177-21, a blowout for the Shakers.

After the final match the teams skated a celebratory lap around the track high-fiving spectators lined up on the boundary. The O-Town Derby Dames were presented with bronze wheel medals and a trophy for third place. Junction placed second winning silver wheels and the Shakers took Title of the best in Utah sporting gold wheel medals and a trophy.
