WEST VALLEY CITY -- The Utah Grizzlies (2-1-1-0) added two late third-period goals to defeat the Bakersfield Condors 6-4 Saturday at Maverik Center before 5,051 fans for the team's fifth annual "Pink in the Rink" game for breast cancer awareness.
Nearly $12,000 was raised to fight breast cancer following the team's live post-game pink jersey auction.
Hugo Carpentier broke a 4-4 tie with 8:36 left in regulation as he sniped a shot from the right-wing circle as Utah broke back in transition. Captain Jake Gannon made it 6-4, scoring into an empty net, as he cleared the puck off of the glass with 17 seconds left in regulation.
"The guys came to the rink ready to play," said coach Kevin Colley. "I loved how we controlled the first 35 minutes of play and then we started committing some penalties. On the other side, we stuck with it and Hugo came down and got a big goal."
After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Grizzlies ripped off four straight power-play goals to build a 4-1 lead as the game started to creep into the latter points of the third period. Ric Jackman tallied the first two power-play scores to give Utah a 2-1 first-intermission lead.
Brad Snetsinger and Brent Gauvreau continued the power-play barrage as Utah built its three-goal lead to 4-1 with 4:16 left in the second.
The Condors answered with three goals in a span of less than five minutes to even the score, as the contest began to head down the stretch.
Ten Utah skaters scored in the game with Ric Jackman leading the way with a total of three points after adding a power-play assist in the second period. Michael Gergen (two assists), Paul Crowder (two assists), Tim Crowder (two assists) and Brad Snetsinger (one goal, one assist) also added multiple-point efforts.
J.P. Lamoureux earned the win for Utah as he stopped 22-of-26 shots. The Grizzlies totaled 43 shots on goaltender Josh Tordjman, who shut Utah out on Friday.
Utah opens an eight-game road trip Wednesday in Boise. The Grizzlies return home Nov. 19 to host Alaska at the Maverik Center.
