Davinci Dragons field basketball teams

The Davinci Academy played its first boys and girls prep basketball games last Friday at the Marshall White Center.

The Dragons squared off against John Locke Academy, another public charter high school. In the girls contest, Davinci defeated John Locke, 46-16, thanks to Chelsea Krise's 16 points. In the boys game, Zach Sandoval scored 12 points, but the Dragons lost 70-34.

Christian Heritage jumps into girls hoops action this week at the popular 1-A Preview at Richfield's Sevier Valley Center.

The rest of the UHSAA basketball and wrestling teams can begin competition next Tuesday.

Pins fall down

The Northern Utah High School Bowling League has begun play. Layton, Syracuse 2, Roy 1 and 2 and Box Elder posted the top scores through the first week of action. For information, visit nuusbca.com.

Warrior commits

Weber High School senior Desiree Young has made a commitment to continue her basketball career at Western New Mexico University.

Coach Greg Adams said Young, a 5-foot-9 guard from North Ogden, will give the Mustangs added depth and size in the guard position.

"She's also an exceptional student and exemplifies great character and hard work," Adams said.

Young averaged 9.7 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the floor as a junir. She also averaged 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and 2.9 steals each game.

Young will study second-ary education at WNMU, located in Silver City, N.M.

The finish line

Several Utah cross country teams are gearing up for the Nike Southwest Regionals this weekend in Phoenix.

Ogden's girls, ranked 12th nationally, must finish 1-2 in the regional to advance to the nationals. Davis is also ranked in the Southwest Region, and will run on Saturday.

The American Fork boys team is ranked No. 2 in the nation. American Fork will be the top-ranked team in the regionals, with Davis ranked No. 3 and Pine View No. 4.

National awards

The Wendy's High School Heisman competition has announced its winners for Utah.

Enterprise High's Tracie Nelson and Monticello High's Devin Wright ared the girls and boys winners, respectively.

The pair will no be eligible for the national Wendy's High School Heisman, to be announced in early December.

Meanwhile, the High School Football Rudy Awards are accepting nomimations. The program honors youth who bring extraordinary heart to their game, if not always the stats.
