Prep soccer: Second-half flurry nets Jayhawks semifinal berth

OGDEN -- Perhaps coach St. Joseph coach Derek Tate didn't get too worried after a scoreless opening half on Saturday in the state 2-A boys soccer quarterfinals.

The Jayhawks had fallen behind a couple of times in the late-season but still found a way to earn a win.

Or maybe he worried just enough to wake his squad up.

The Jayhawks won their eighth straight matching, scoring a pair after halftime for a 2-0 win over Oakley and a berth in next week's semifinals.

David Donlevy scored a pair of goals and Mitch Koehler notched another impressive shutout to boost St. Joseph into a semifinal matchup on Region 14 champion South Summit set for Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Jordan High School.

The winner earns a trip to the state final, set for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The Jayhawks improved to 9-5-1 on the season.

South Summit topped Gunnison 1-1, advancing on penalty kicks in a shootout. Waterford and Rowland Hall will meet in the other semifinal.

3-A tournament

* DELTA 2, BEN LOMOND 2 (DELTA WINS SHOOTOUT 4-3): At Delta, the Scots' magical state 3-A tournament run came to an end in the quarterfinals.

Victor Galindo scored a pair of goals for the Scots (8-10-0 overall), but after regulation and overtime, the contest was still knotted at 2-2.

The Rabbits edged the Scots 4-3 in the shootut to next Friday's semifinals against Wasatch. Juan Diego and Desert Hills will meet in the other semifinal.

Baseball

* BEAVER 10, LAYTON CHRISTIAN 0: At Coalville, The Eagles (1-9) saw their season end in the first round of the state 2-A playoffs.

North Summit also lost, falling to South Sevier 13-3.
