WEST HAVEN -- It came down to the third and final round, and Steve Walser had a little bit more left than Ogden's Dave Foley.
In an upset, Utahn Walser scored a close decision win over Foley in the main event at Saturday's TotalMayhem 5 MMA card at The Gym in West Haven. Foley, a striker, almost ended the fight early, flooring Walser with a hard left-hand shot in the first round. His attempt at a choke failed, however, and Walser dominated most of the round on the ground.
Foley staggered Walser in the second round with a punch and fought well enough on the ground to take round 2. However, Foley tired in round 3 and was unable to keep Walser off him, despite encouragement from the large crowd, which was heavily pro-Foley. The scores were 29-28, twice, for Walser, and a generous 30-27 for the winner.
In a competitive, well-matched bout between two Utah MMA prospects, Don Moroney stopped Ogden's Justin Roberts via a TKO at 1:12 of the third round. After two even rounds, Moroney pressed a tired Roberts, flooring him with several hard shots.
In a matchup between two Utah veterans, Ogden's Patrick Reeves was TKOd by Eric Hernandez at 51 seconds of the second round. After a rough first round, Reeves was doing well with leg kicks in the second round before being floored by a punch.
In a women's Muay Thai kickboxing fight, Amy Davis used superior kicks and overall boxing skills to score a three-round decision win over a game Andrea Martin. All three judges scored the fight 30-27.
Ogden's Cole Rose scored a first-round TKO over Utah's Jason Dalton. Rose hurt Dalton with several shots to the legs and knees.
In another all-Utah fight, after a wild first round that was mostly dominated by Michael Robinson, Cisco Alcantara took control of the fight in the second round by stopping an exhausted Robinson via a tap out from an arm triangle at 1:40 of the round. And Idaho's Ryan Wagner defeated Ogden's Eric Tillotson with a triangle choke tap out after 66 seconds of the first round.
Between fights, Ogden professional boxers James "JC" Villastrigo and Val Tinajero addressed the crowd, essentially trash-talking the other. According to TotalMayhem promoter, Isaiah Salazar, Villastrigo and Tinajero are planned for a Utah championship fight, probably at middleweight.
